It was a stupid question. There was a latch beneath each of our mattresses in plain view. I pushed one and let the door of the cabinet down. Three boxes. “My hidden library,” I said mysteriously. I pulled them out one by one and opened the flaps. “Books,” I said, peering into the first, “magazines and newsletters,” I said, opening the second, “and maps,” I said, tapping the third. “Hunh” was all my son had to say. He flopped back on his pillow, turned his back to me, and resumed playing. I hauled the boxes one at a time and put them under the kitchen table at the front of the trailer.

It’s charming,” I said. ” “You go ahead. I have to wait for my partner to spell me. ” As I finished my sidework, I reflected on my history with Wilson. We’d first met in Kermit Lynch’s wineshop, studying each other. Richard was thinner then but muscular, and he moved with the lumbering grace of an athlete as he wandered the store. He had a full head of dark brown hair back then and a broad forehead, but the nose was always his most prominent feature. It looked as if it were designed to be inserted into a wineglass.

There had to be at least a dozen people who would happily stuff his face in a barrel, and that was just between Napa and Sonoma. I’d heard plenty of winemakers say so at the bar, even some he’d treated fairly. “I appreciate what you’re doing,” she said. ” “I’ll do what I can,” I said. “I promise. ” I flipped the cell shut. I was pleased Janie had turned to me. It was the first chance she’d given me to prove that I wasn’t such a bad guy, after all, and I was intent on showing her that I could come through in a pinch.
