When azide was included activity became detectable and was apparently optimal at concentrations between 2 mM and 10 mM in the assay. Benzylamine deamination, measured as hydrogen peroxide production in the presence of 5 mM azide, was approximately one half that measured, as benzaldehyde production in the absence of azide. A similar relationship was found when enzyme activity was measured as benzaldehyde production, both in the absence and presence of 5 mM azide. The apparent inhibitory effect of azide was investigated using the assay based upon benzaldehyde production.
