It’s amazing how fast time goes by. It was only a few months ago that I was at Walt Disney World touring each of the parks and engaging in some quality time with my Mom and Grandparents. Now, tomorrow I will be whisked away to Disneyland where I will spend a week relaxing in the very Oregon like weather of Anaheim, California, where we will be walking several miles a day and getting back to the hotel exhausted. I will take this opportunity to remind you that my Mom and I love going to Disneyland and Walt Disney World; you might call it an obsession; my Mom doesn’t care for the term, but when you go 2-3 times a year… It really is one of the only places where I feel I get so much experience for the money spent. What places do you go where you think you get the most experience for your money?
We will be there for a total of seven days, leaving Sunday and arriving the following Saturday. I expect this trip to be spectacular and I’m doing something that I don’t ever remember doing before; I’m not bringing my primary video camera. Instead, I will be bringing my Nikon D90, a camera I bought a couple months ago and have been awaiting an opportunity to really try it out. I am nervous about using it because it will solidify my suspicion that I can’t take a picture to save my life. It’s one thing to take bad photos with a point-and-shoot, you expect a low quality of picture and all you ever think is just how much better your pictures would be if only you had a better camera. Well, I bought one, and now I have no excuses, other than finding out once and for all I have no talent. Do you prefer video or still cameras when on vacation? Why?
Even though I’m not bringing my primary video camera, I will be using a Flip MinoHD to do some sort of video trip report. I did this a couple of years ago when I went to Disneyland with most of the family and it worked well, though, with a lot of people in the group it’s a little more dynamic of a report than with only one other. I’ll try it out, but I’m pretty sure there isn’t going to be as much camera interaction as there was when I had five people to record rather than just one.
Packing is always an interesting aspect of traveling. If I really set my mind to it, I could probably pull things together within 15 minutes. It’s, of course, never that way; I have a tendency to clean when I should be packing. This only makes packing last hours longer than it should. In addition to cleaning, I also attempt to do a myriad of other activities that in some really loose sense pertain to getting ready to go on the trip, but are in no way as important as throwing a weeks worth of clothes in a suitcase and calling it good. It’s always more important that I transfer movies onto my iPod, or make playlists or even begin a trip report. Are you a procrastinator like me? What do you do instead of pack?
Ahh, the trip report. For some this is a wonderful way to relive the vacation, and maybe for those reading they will learn a cool new tip or fact. For others, the trip report is an act of sheer will and possibly dread. I typically don’t write trip reports because I get into the habit of drowning myself in detail. The whole experience becomes so overwhelming, recounting and writing about ever minute detail that I literally bore myself to sleep. I find that if I’m bored writing it, then there is no way that someone would enjoy reading it. That’s probably why I want to focus more on a video trip report rather than a written one. What are you thoughts on trip reports? Do you write/read them?
